RENAISSANCE GLASS STUDIO IN ASHEVILLE, NC
Experiencing a beautiful garden is one of life’s simple pleasures. Now you can have that same pleasure every time you look at the beautiful mosaic you’ll create with Laura, who is known for her magical landscapes and innovative interpretations of nature.
In this workshop we will explore bas-relief substrates, cutting techniques and create our mosaics with a wide variety of materials. Students are asked to bring photos of their favorite parts of a garden as inspiration for their mosaic. When designing we will choose from many different materials creating tesserae with unexpected textures, luster and colors. Have fun with this wonderfully innovative approach to depict the elements of your garden.
We will focus on composition, dimension and scale when constructing our substrates. Throughout the workshop there will be both class and individual discussion with an emphasis on colors, texture and light. While playing in the garden, this is a great opportunity to explore new resources, develop cutting custom tesserae, find a deeper understanding of composition and expand your knowledge of adhesives.
Instructor will provide a deep-framed substrate and all the materials for the project. Students asked bring a good quality wheeled nipper, tweezers and a small spatula (for spreading thin-set).
A note from Laura with ideas for preparing for the workshop will come to you 2 weeks prior to workshop date. This workshop is for intermediate and advanced artists.
Instructor Background: Laura Rendlen’s aesthetic and style for mosaic art is representational. She creates environments that capture the essence of a place. Through vivid color and soft expression she conveys the intangibles in nature, particularly wind, light and movement. Her most recent works have been studies of gardens.
