Certificate Design Course for Large-scale Public Mosaics.
Friday, December 1, through Sunday, December 3, 2017 Santa Barbara, California. 9:30-4:30. Lunch break 12:30 to 2 pm at nearby restaurants.
David Tootill, Artistic Director of Southbank Mosaics CIC, Principal of London School of Mosaic,* and Chair of British Association for Modern Mosaic will lead this unique workshop in the U.S. for mosaic artists, architects, designers and other professionals seeking to expand their knowledge of design and implementation for large scale public mosaics.

We will present the structure of the mosaic making process, the purpose of the mosaic (who is the audience?), key subjects and concepts; research and partnering methods and how to include non-professional participants. How to draw the cartoon (bozzetto), maintaining design consistency and using iconic qualities (i.e. andamento & including pieces of exquisite detail); scaling up and numbering sections. How to set up sessions for collectives and teaching them to work in a consistent style. Ordering Materials; color blends and consistency; size of tile. Project Management to include fundraising, partnerships, budgeting, building a staff and volunteer team, documentation of sessions and final work. The site: visibility, lighting, installation. There will be hands-on practical sessions where participants will design and make a small piece to learn key techniques and aesthetic considerations. Participants will receive a certificate from the London School of Mosaic.
