Bend Fold and Undulate – Lightweight Dimensional Hand-Formed Substrates with Marian Shapiro
Session 25A: Tuesday, April 23, 2019, 8:00am – 5:00pm
Session 25B: Wednesday, April 24, 2019, 8:00am – 5:00pm
Price: $365 (Includes $40 Materials Fee)
Australian mosaic artist Marian Shapiro is well known for her use of three-dimensional, hand-formed substrates, often giving the illusion of flowing material.
Join her in this practical, fun, hands-on session and discover how to make your own lightweight, dimensional, hand-formed substrates suitable for indoors or outdoors. The day begins with an inspirational presentation, giving examples of Marian s work using this method plus that of students who have taken this course. Then, working with fiberglass mesh and thinset, you create two wall-hanging substrates of your own design. The first is flat, folded, or undulating – or a combination of all three. The second substrate is hollow, for instance, a mask or torso, and is created by using sand to make a mold (sand-casting).
Both of these substrates are made in two stages. You make the first stage during the workshop but complete them in your own time afterward. All the materials you need to take away and finish your class projects are supplied. As well as seeing Marian demonstrate the finishing steps, you get hands-on experience in class. You will get a half-made substrate to complete during the session with Marian s input and advice so that you have the skills and confidence to finish off your own class projects when you get them home.
Extensive discussion of design concepts, as well as issues to be taken into account when applying mosaic to a 3-D form, are an integral part of the day. The course focuses on process and at the end of the day, you will have one small finished substrate complete with hanging hardware, plus a thorough understanding of the methods taught and have the confidence to experiment with the technique and make it your own.
New for 2019. There is no actual mosaicking in this class so for the first time, Marian is offering a second day to address this. Add on “Into the Third Dimension” at a reduced rate and learn how to mosaic the substrate you completed in “Bend Fold and Undulate”. This offer is only open to students taking “Bend Fold and Undulate” at SAMA 2019.
Marian believes strongly that people learn best by doing and her teaching style is highly participative. The class is kept small to give students individual attention and students are actively encouraged to ask questions. Full, illustrated course notes are provided to take away. This session is suitable for all levels but will particularly benefit those who wish to extend their artistic practice by moving beyond the flat surface.
Adopted Australian, Marian Shapiro has been working full time in mosaic since becoming obsessed by the art form in 2003. She is fond of a visual pun and is probably best known for her dimensional works which give the illusion of flowing material. Her artwork is shown and collected nationally and internationally.
Marian has been teaching mosaics since 2008 and is widely sought after as a teacher and speaker both in Australia and abroad. Her teaching style is highly participative and she works with small groups to ensure that all participants benefit fully. Students gain practical, usable skills and techniques that they can develop after the course and integrate into their own practice. Presentations give inspiration and information and full written notes accompany each workshop. dariandesign.com.au
