In this all-day class, you will sharpen and hone your glass cutting skills while building an 11” framed mosaic.
You will learn techniques for cutting round glass substrates, how to frame your mosaics with zinc edge came, basic soldering skills needed to make your own metal frames, and how to choose the best adhesive for your project (several different examples made with different adhesives and the pros and cons of each will be on display for discussion).
We will discuss basic color theory and considerations for helping you choose glass for future projects, talk about pattern variations and the best way to approach cutting a pattern out of a sheet of glass, and finish with grouting pointers as we complete a mosaic in one day!
Students will have a completed mosaic mandala Students will have the option of creating sample tiles with various glues available for GOG projects.
This session should particularly benefit those who want to explore different adhesives for glass on glass mosaics, are new to working with glass, or want guidance in learning how to cut glass more expertly, are interested in learning how to create their own metal frames using stained glass techniques.
Materials list and class notes will be emailed to students.
Framed substrate mailed to students. Materials list includes items that are readily available online or at local retail stores. Small sample sizes of some of the adhesives will be mailed to students.
Carrie Strope began working with glass in 2005 when she walked into a beginning glass fusing class and simply refused to leave! Since then, she has expanded her resume considerably, and now teaches techniques in fused glass, stained glass, and mosaic internationally at glass studios and conferences. Carrie’s mosaic work focuses on glass and incorporates precision cutting. She was crowned the SuperPro Glass Cutting Champion at the 2014 Glass Craft and Bead Expo. Carrie is a certified Integrated Learning Specialist on the roster of teaching artists with the Nebraska Arts Council’s Artists in Schools and Communities program. She works with students k-12, as well as adults, creating individual and collaborative art pieces for installation in public and private institutions, generally culminating in an opening reception for sharing the project and process with parents and the community. calyxglass.com
