Kite flying is an old, traditional form of recreation for kids all over the world. Kites are referred to by different names across many countries. In my native island, Puerto Rico, kites are called “chiringas”. I always remember when I was a child in the late 50’s, and my brother (12 years older than me) taught me how to build kites. At the time they were constructed out of “crepe” or tissue paper (like the one used for gift wrappings), sticks from the coconut palm branches, fine thread and glue made from flour. Flying a kite can symbolize that you pursue to have control of your life. Unforgettable childhood lessons and memories.
