“Beauty Undisturbed”, 2021, 6″ x 6″, handmade tile, stained glass, unglazed porcelain, smalti gold, tinted mortar, metallic additive
To create visual interest, I would normally break up a featured tile such as the one in this mosaic. But the artist who created it almost didn’t sell it because she so loved how it turned out. I don’t blame her. Its mint-colored under-glaze radiates beneath the rust tones on top. And the delicate leaf imprints give the tile unity and beauty that I couldn’t disturb. My job was to accent its shape, lines, and colors as best I could. If hung where light hits this piece, the viewer is treated to the twinkle of scattered gold tiles and to the subtle shimmer of bronze metallic tint atop the porcelain and mortar.
