Acorn Woodpecker by Joanne Daschel
‘Acorn Woodpecker’ is one of a continuing series of mosaics by Joanne Daschel highlighting birds of the western USA, particularly coastal Oregon. The woodpecker is seen here clinging to the bark of an oak tree, possibly scouting locations for storing his cache of food. This mosaic is rendered in smalti (bird), granite (tree) and stained glass (sky), on a 6″ square porcelain tile substrate. The sky and edges are grouted, stone and smalti areas are not grouted to emphasize depth and texture. The mosaic is signed on the back, with a D-ring attached for hanging.
Materials: stained glass smalti, granite, tile substrate, tinted mortar, grout
