In the Time of Covid by Laurie Mika
This mixed media mosaic, in the Time of Covid, is part of an ongoing pandemic-related series that I started last year at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. This mosaic was created on a deep-cradle panel board and measures 8 x 10 inches and is 1.5 inches deep. The sides have been collaged with napkins. The central figure in this mosaic is Saint Corona who appears often in this body of work. She is situated on a background that has the ubiquitous imagery of the virus surrounding her body. On top of her halo is a crown or “corona” that symbolizes the coronavirus. Each tile was handmade out of polymer clay that has been stamped, painted, gold-leafed and embedded with rhinestones and jewels. The combined influences of Medieval treasure bindings and Mexican folk art are seen in this piece. Saint Corona is a symbol of hope and protection.
Materials: Polymer clay tiles, glass tesserae, rhinestones, gold leaf, jewels
