This is a four-hour tutorial concentrating on the best way to use and cleave different stones for mosaic. Tucson is the home of the world’s biggest annual rock and mineral trade show, and the class materials will all come from that show, from calcite to felspars, pyrite and flint as well as other colorful minerals. Students will receive advice on when to cleave (or not) and how to follow crystal structures in minerals that are more complicated to break down than marble. Students will also receive mineral samples and written handouts for future reference. This class should benefit anyone who wants to know more about how to incorporate natural materials into their art, and which ones are best suited for different circumstances.
There will be a presentation, followed by demonstrations on cleaving or chipping a variety of minerals.
