Always wanted to learn Hammer and Hardie cutting techniques? Or frustrated with your own hammer and hardie cutting and want to improve? Come get a solid 8 hours of experience I promise not to chain you to the table like a slave, but we’ll be spending A LOT of time at the hardie block! This class is for those students who have some hammer and hardie experience but would like to have the extra supervised time to hone their cutting skills or for those students who have no hammer and hardie experience and would like to learn the cutting methods before going on to another mosaic course. Students will be exposed to 4-5 different hammer styles as well as how to cut a wide variety of materials including: Stones of varying thickness, densities and hardness smalti-Italian, Mexican and Chinese, dalle de verre, Litovi, unglazed porcelain and ceramic and unusual and challenging materials brought in by students themselves. Cutting methods for various basic and more complex shapes will be covered and practiced. If you can hit a nail with a hammer you will most likely be able to learn to use these tools. If your hands are unsteady and you have trouble with eye-hand coordination, this may be a frustrating class for you. Tools and materials will be provided. If you want/need eye protection, please bring them. Usually glasses are enough but if you wish to have goggles you must bring them. This is a cutting course focusing on the simple importance of practice, time and repetition to become better and better. I promise you will cut better by the end of the day than you did at the beginning of the day. No actual mosaics will be made in the class. Students go home with their cut tesserae, a self-made chart of various size tesserae and uncut remainder of their materials. In addition to the materials we will be cutting, students are invited to bring in any materials they are curious about to see if they are appropriate for hammer and hardie cutting. This session should particularly benefit those who wish to expand their mosaic materials repertoire and explore the versatility that cutting with hammer and hardie offers.
