Finishing School: Surface Transformations for Tesserae and Mortar with Kelley Knickerbocker
Session 19A: Wednesday, May 13, 2020, 8:00am – 5:00pm
Session 19B: Thursday, May 14, 2020, 8:00am – 5:00pm
Price: $325 (includes $30 materials fee)
Kelley has been inventively altering the surface of materials and mortar for nearly 15 years to add nuance, emphasis, and expressiveness to her mosaics. In this equal-parts-demo/lecture-and-hands-on workshop she’ll use images, lecture and demos to share multiple techniques by which the surface color/value/texture of tesserae (porcelain, stone, ceramic) and mortar can be jazzed up, toned down, or changed along the way, and even after the mosaic is built! Techniques include defacement, layered washes and rubs, gilding, read-through, tesserae backing and more. In the hands-on section, students will solidify their understanding of the demonstrated techniques by applying them to multiple materials and mortars on a sample mosaic (provided) which they’ll take home for reference. Class handouts will include a resource list with names and sources of products used.
All materials and supplies provided. Students need only bring wheeled nippers (Montolits recommended) and tweezers.
Seattle-based, self-taught visual artist Kelley Knickerbocker left a 22-yr administrative career at the University of Washington in 2006 to found Rivenworks Mosaics, where she designs and fabricates mosaic artwork for public, commercial, residential and gallery environments. Kelley’s ruggedly dimensional artworks, which often make use of the rudiments and detritus of other making processes, are the distillation of her fascination with contrast/texture, and in 2015 garnered her the Innovation in Contemporary Mosaic award from the Society of American Mosaic Artists. Her work is widely collected and regularly exhibited in the US and abroad, and has been featured in several mosaic books. To enhance her studio practice, Kelley travels extensively teaching in-depth workshops on mosaic style and technique, collaborating, and speaking on creativity and the practice of art. rivenworks.com
