Next up in our series of stories from SAMA Members, Volunteers, and Board of Trustees, we have SAMA BOT Secretary, Peggy Schuning.

Embracing an identity as an artist can be a long journey. The Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA) has played a significant role in this process for me. Learning mosaics involves understanding that broken pieces have value, both literally and metaphorically. After attending a SAMA conference in Philadelphia, I embarked on a relentless quest to gain skills and knowledge about the fascinating medium from respected instructors.

Each conference since has provided opportunities to meet educators, students, volunteers, and dedicated mosaic artists who have all contributed to developing my artistic voice. As SAMA commemorates its 25th anniversary, there is optimism for the future. May our relationships and mosaic artworks endure, and may our platform connect future generations with the history and practices of mosaics.
