Tour Two: Cultural Tour of Detroit, Michigan
Friday, September 20, 2024, 8:00am (depart Somerset Inn) – 4:30pm (return to Somerset Inn)
$124 tour fee, includes box lunch
The Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA) invites you to “the Motor City” that is Detroit.
Detroit contains an amazing collection of public art where mosaics play an important role. The
city was established on Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River, which connects Lake Huron and
Lake Erie. Originally settled by the French in the early 18th century—Detroit is French for “the
straight”—it was immediately established as a trading post and the city and region grew. By the
late 19th century, the industrial shift started to emerge, and Detroit became the automotive
manufacturing capital of the world and has maintained that title since. Every destination and
mosaic project in these tours was chosen to showcase artists as well as points of interest in
Metro Detroit.
On this tour you will see several cultural icons of Detroit. The icons that make the Motor City an
arts destination. A visit to the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) for a private tour and a stop at The
Shephard which is a new art gallery that has been created in a former church. Additionally, you
will witness several mosaic installations, many with the famous Pewabic Pottery tiles and a visit
to the Detroit Library.
