Mosaic Stepping Stones: Mosaic for Exterior Environments – Direct Method with Jennifer Kuhns
Friday, February 5, 2021
11:00am – 8:00pm
Students will learn the basics for exterior garden mosaic while creating a durable 12” stepping stone. A lecture will include information on substrates appropriate for exterior use and how to ensure durability in harsh climates.
This class is great for the beginner as we will be covering tools, cutting techniques, and basic mosaic design, and is also appropriate for the student who has already experimented with interior or craft mosaics and would like to expand their knowledge to include exterior, garden or permanent installations.
Students will create a mosaic garden ornament using glass tiles on a stepping stone. Options will be provided for an exact template to follow, or to create your own radiating design. A supply list will be provided to source your own items, and kits will be made available for purchase from the instructor. *Students will need to provide their own pavers, available at most hardware stores.
Jennifer Kuhns has been creating mosaic for 20 years. Working primarily with stained glass, carefully shaping each piece, she creates custom mosaic for private, corporate and public spaces all over the U.S., including sidewalk inlays, wall murals, window treatments, and other architectural elements. The style and techniques in Jennifer’s mosaic range from naturalistic and photorealistic to wildly colorful and stylized, but it is generally characterized by precision cutting of materials and careful placement resulting in smooth lines and strategic use of texture and reflectivity. Jennifer’s goal is to create works of art that have function and integrity, and that convey a sense of serenity and optimism in otherwise utilitarian spaces. Jennifer has honed methods of fabricating commissions in her rural studio that can be easily transported to another location for quick installation and is excited to share these skills with fellow mosaic artists. jkmosaic.com
