Kelley has been inventively altering the surfaces of tesserae and mortar for nearly 15 years to add nuance, emphasis, and expressiveness to her mosaics. In this workshop she’ll share multiple techniques by which the surface color/value/texture of tesserae (porcelain, stone, ceramic, glass) and mortar can be jazzed up, toned down, or changed during and even after construction of your mosaic! Techniques include defacement, layered washes and rubs, gilding, read-through, tesserae backing and more. Students will apply the demonstrated techniques to multiple materials and mortar on a sample mosaic in real time.
Materials fee includes a sample mosaic, surface modification products, full material/resource list and the course handout, shipped to each student in advance. Students will supply their own incidentals (gloves, cups, stirrers, paper towels, Q-tips, rags, etc.).
Want to save the materials cost and take Finishing School as strictly lecture/demo? Register after January 29, 2021 , receive full resource list and course handout via email, and join us in class for all the info and discussion.
Seattle-based, self-taught visual artist Kelley Knickerbocker left a 22-yr administrative career at the University of Washington in 2006 to found Rivenworks Mosaics, where she designs and fabricates mosaic artwork for public, commercial, residential, and gallery environments. Kelley’s ruggedly dimensional artworks, which often make use of the rudiments and detritus of other making processes, are the distillation of her fascination with contrast/texture, and in 2015 garnered her the Innovation in Contemporary Mosaic award from the Society of American Mosaic Artists. Her work is widely collected and regularly exhibited in the US and abroad, and has been featured in several mosaic books. To enhance her studio practice, Kelley travels extensively teaching in-depth workshops on mosaic style and technique, collaborating, and speaking on creativity and the practice of art. rivenworks.com
