The Urban Art Committee (a partnership between Alabama Center for the Arts, Decatur Downtown Redevelopment Authority, and other community partners) is seeking mosaic proposals for the new farmers market building in Downtown Decatur, Alabama. The Morgan County-Decatur Farmers Market has been a thriving public marketplace since 1937. A brand-new building is currently being constructed in the location of the old market. The new market will be a destination for both locals and visitors alike with its fresh produce, meats, flowers, and handcrafted local goods. The new building boasts an open-air structure with more accessible vendor stalls, a green space for events and entertainment, and beautiful new finishes. The mosaic mural will serve as the focal point for the exterior of the building that faces the green space and street front. The committee would like to see a mosaic mural that focuses on farming/agriculture/produce specific to the Morgan County area. We’d like this mural to be a place that people seek out for photo opportunities and something that the community can be proud of since this will be the largest public mosaic piece in our area.
The dimensions of the portion of the wall where the mosaic mural will be created are 9 feet (height) x 7 feet (width). The wall space the artist will be working on is made of foam core backerboard (GoBoard) and is surrounded by cedar plank flashing. Mosaic mural is exterior and will be exposed to outdoor elements.
Artists are encouraged to think outside the box with their design and are free to incorporate the various elements into the mosaic piece.
