Biggs describes the theme of the exhibition as follows: “We walk, drive and work because of our ability to recognize pattern. Mathematicians and physicists rely on pattern recognition to understand and explain the world around us. Artists and architects use it as a principle not necessarily consciously to underlie all they do. Music itself is pure pattern. The financial world relies on algorithms (systematic patterns of reasoning) to predict and run its operations. But pattern is so fundamental to existence that it often goes unseen. It is the focus of this show. A series of mosaics by some of the best contemporary practitioners demonstrate the multiplicity of ways in which it can be expressed and brought to consciousness, and they ask us to look at and think about something which is normally an ‘unseen’ element of artist’s work.”
