Ruth Tyszka
In this presentation, Ruth Tyszka delves into the vast opportunities available to artists beyond traditional open calls and gallery representation. She highlights how curating and proposing group exhibitions can provide crucial context for an artist’s work, offer unique community experiences, reach targeted audiences, and create opportunities for other artists.
Drawing from her extensive experience in organizing exhibitions ranging from two to twenty-four artists, Tyszka will guide attendees through each step of the process. This includes conceptualizing the desired exhibition, identifying and curating artists, finding suitable venues (with a focus on community art center galleries), and understanding common exhibition proposal requirements.
The presentation will also cover key topics such as secondary programming, collaborating with unfamiliar artists, and effectively managing the exhibition and artists throughout the often two-year-long timeline from submission to opening. Attendees will benefit from insights and “best practices” shared by art center directors, presented through engaging visuals including images from past shows and video clips.
Ruth Tyszka is a mosaic artist and lawyer in the Detroit area. Much of her legal career was spent researching and writing for United States federal judges and working on her own mosaic artwork in the spaces between. She has turned to art full-time and now spends more time on her own art, writes about art, and puts together group art exhibitions. Her artwork features wave and water imagery and reflects her reverence and concern for the environment. She is a past board member and Governance Chair for the Society of American Mosaic Artists.
