This Built America Profiles Exmore, VA Mosaic Company New Ravenna Mosaics
This Built America, a new multimedia platform from AOL exploring the companies and people reimagining American manufacturing, comes to Exmore, VA this week to profile an essential, artistic business to a town facing hard times.
Sara Baldwin’s New Ravenna Mosaics was officially founded in 1992 after a trip to the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art ignited Baldwin’s love for mosaics. New Ravenna has created and crafted some of the most beautiful and useful mosaics that get displayed in homes and businesses across three continents. In the episode, Baldwin discusses the family atmosphere New Ravenna has fostered while keeping the company’s profits in Exmore, where it is greatly needed.
“What people don’t understand sometimes about manufacturing is that it’s a net importer of wealth to a community,” Baldwin explains. “We make products here, ship them to Mrs. Smith in Nebraska. She sends the money here, and guess what? It stays in the community.” This has morphed the company into a ‘second home’ that makes everyone feel like they are part of the same family.
For New Ravenna Mosaics, being part of This Built America is proof that Baldwin and her second family made the right decision in banking on New Ravenna’s potential all those years ago. As Baldwin goes on to explain, “The last few years have been a roller coaster, and having the good fortune to keep company with the other amazing manufacturers in this program makes us feel that all our hard work really means something.”
