Art has always been my life. I have always loved to explore different art forms and techniques. In 2003, I decided to do mosaics. I had read books in the past but then turned to the internet for more information and references. While researching, I found a rock star of mosaics in the next town over, an internet support group, and a national association-SAMA. What a way to start!
This new found group accepted me with open arms. Even my husband, Tom, found perfect opportunities to plug in through volunteering. SAMA offered workshops and classes that enabled me to grow in my art. They made available comfortable events and places to gather and enjoy like-minded people. Being able to discuss tips and tricks and experiences with other artists was just what I needed. There were so many others that wanted to share and learn, just like me.

I sent a piece to San Francisco for the AMP project, not really knowing what to expect. The acceptance, honest critique, and feedback were simply amazing. SAMA brought together, for us, manufacturers, and retailers of materials and tools. I could touch and see a great deal of the media that was being used to make some of the most beautiful mosaics in the world. Many people have asked me what it was like at the convention in San Francisco. I have told everyone that it was like going to Cinderella’s ball. My response has been exactly the same for every convention since.

I have only missed two conventions since 2003 and I hope to never miss again!
SAMA has given me the opportunity to take my art from coast to coast and border to border, something I may not have pursued on my own. They didn’t push, they encouraged. They didn’t criticize, they helped. This organization has given me the confidence and capability to be the mosaic artist I want to be.
