New mosaic mural in Helena celebrates ceramic education
SAMA’s LAUREL TRUE has designed and created a public community mural in downtown Helena, MT. The mural, 7 by 15.5 feet long, is located in the pedestrian plaza of the Great Northern Town Center, and celebrates the Archie Bray Foundation’s 65th anniversary as “a fine place to work” for ceramic artists. The Foundation provides exhibition, sales, and warehouse galleries, as well as community classes and workshops for all levels.
True led a five-day, hands-on workshop in which the group explored the methodology and techniques for approaching community-based mosaic projects, culminating in the installation of the commemorative mosaic mural.
Support for the project comes from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Jerry Metcalf Foundation and Alan and Nancy Nicholson. The ceramic tile was donated by Quarry Tile of Spokane, Washington.
