Session 9: 3D Substrates in Flight with Kate Pepin

A rampant recycler, Kate Pepin will teach you to create a substrate in flight (bird or bug) predominantly from recycled materials. All materials will be provided. Two techniques are employed, one for a structural body and the other creates a thin substrate suitable for delicate wings.

You will need to bring your own tools including two pairs of small pliers, scissors for paper and fabric and apron.

Kate Pepin (Ann Arbor via New York) creates mixed media artworks and sculptures. She often incorporates found objects or natural materials in a manner which emphasizes their resiliency and beauty. Her works directly respond to the surrounding environment, and are drawn from the artist’s everyday experiences in nature, or in civilization, often recognizing the duality existing at the intersection. 

Pepin’s work demonstrates how life extends beyond its own subjective limits and often tells a story about the effects of global cultural interaction over the latter half of the twentieth century.
