Session 3: Creative Micro Mosaic Jewelry with Sandra Aquino
Thursday, September 19, 2024, 8:00am – 5:00pm
Workshop: Hands-On
All Levels: Artistic Development
Price: $401 (Includes $76 Materials Fee)
This session should particularly benefit those who are interested in learning how to create beautiful jewelry pieces using the micro mosaic technique along with two different techniques that are integrated as part of the process. Dry painting (mica colors) and uv resin for crystallization.
In this workshop the student will learn a creative way to integrate three art techniques to create delicate and gorgeous pieces of jewelry. Micro mosaic, Mica paint and uv resin. The use of those techniques together is not common and are not commonly used in the actual market, giving us an opportunity to create a new product with a grade of quality that will last forever.
This workshop will equip the student with the correct knowledge to manipulate the Italian (fillati) glass carefully, select the correct mica color to provide a background enhancement to the piece and use the correct amount of uv resin to provide an exquisite termination to the piece created.
The student will, above all, learn how to:
- Cut the glass correctly using the tools provided.
- Manipulate the uv resin correctly and cure the liquid with an uv lamp.
- Eliminate the bubbles.
- Use the exact amount of liquid for the piece created.
- Learn how to clean it during the process.
- Avoid common mistakes using the uv resin.
- Decide the correct mica color to enhance the piece of jewelry.
- Use the color chart to match the colors correctly.
At the end of the workshop the students will be able to create their own masterpieces. Pendants, rings, bracelets, and/or earrings based on their level of ability and creativity. In this class the students will create a pendant and a ring.
The group will receive personalized attention and guidance from the instructor. Each person will have their own materials and tools to work individually during the entire process.
At the end of the workshop each student should leave with two different pieces of jewelry ready to show. At the end of the workshop a Q&A session to clarify any doubts that the class might have.
All materials will be provided by the instructor and the students will take them home after they finish.

Born in Puerto Rico, Ms. Sandra Aquino is a teacher at heart with a Ph.D. in Global Education and curriculum development. Retired in 2018 Ms. Aquino moved back to P.R. to take care of her elderly parents who needed personal attention after the 2017 hurricane Maria that left more than 4K people death and thousands without proper shelter. Six years later she still lives in P.R. and keeps caring for her parents, now 90 and 85 years old. She joined “El Atelier del Mosaico” in San Juan in Jan. 2021, and there she had the opportunity of learning a new skill that gracefully complemented her other passions, pottery, oil paint and music. El Atelier del Mosaico served as a fantastic mentor for her abilities and skills, transforming her life into a colorful and happy “micro mosaic.”
Since 2022 she has been teaching monthly her course to students in Puerto Rico. fatmalidesigns.com
