Session 11: Handle It with Wasentha Young – Cancelled

Friday, September 20, 2024, 1:00pm – 3:00pm
Hands-on
Beginner / Intermediate: Artistic Development
Price: $140 (Includes $15 materials fee)

A utilitarian piece of art that fits into shorter timeframes can be gratifyingly elating. During this session you will practice letting the cognitive part of the brain take a back seat and allow an ‘Element’ (an object) help guide the creative process. The substrate that will be used for this exploration will be a pair of cabinet knobs approximately a 1.25″ square surface.

Learning to let go of traditional techniques and finding the organic flow or colors, materials, and textures that can surround and support an Element(s) in your work can be challenging. The mind tends to get in the way. A small pieces can lead the way to sensing this process.

We will breathe, play with colors, and let go into the interaction of element, tesserae and the creative mind. As a mini substrate, a smaller piece of mosaic art, in this case a cabinet knob can be made in between larger projects, when you can’t sleep but would like to be creative, or in pockets of time when you find yourself with an hour or two of spare time. Knobs, as a reasonably priced piece of art, can be placed in a broadly and offers you access to developing a wider range of patrons.

You should bring two small “Elements” (no larger than 3/4″ in width, height, and depth), and a handful of smooth chips of stone and/or glass that you might want to use to place around the Element. Tools that will come in handy to have will be nippers and tweezers. There will be a couple of table hardies and hammers available if needed.

Materials supplied by presenter will be: 2 knobs (along with screws), color pencils, paper, some supporting pieces of stone and glass tesserae if you don’t have any, and the binder.

Wasentha Young has studied mosaic art since 2006 with world renowned mosaic masters. She has taught mosaics as a contemporary art, exhibited her mosaic work nationally in museums, groups and has had solo exhibits. Wasentha is also a master of Tai Chi, meditation, and energy work. wasenthasmosaics.com
