Smalti Portrait Mosaic with Andjelka Radojevic
Luna Mosaic Arts
July 17-21/23, 2019
Skill Level: All level welcome! suitable for advanced students and beginners as well
Andjelka offers two types of workshops: 7 days and 5 days. We will be using Mexican smalti. Each student will be provided with a specific amount of smalti based on the size of your image. More smalti can be purchased if you need to use more then you are provided with. The 5-day workshop will be an image that is about 8"x12" and the 7-day workshop will be an image that is about 10"x14". If you sign up for the 5 day, there will be the option to pay for extra days at the end of the 5-day workshop. If you decide you would like to stay longer the fee would be $145 per day.
The class starts with exploring a general global mosaic history in order to help students understand how to create a successful mosaic. Andjelka will explain how the elements of color, line, texture, shape and form can be used to create balance, movement and the correct proportions in mosaic. She will help each student gain knowledge of color theory and the basic elements of design. Multiple examples from Art history will be shown and discussed. She will also talk about the different kinds of mosaic construction challenges that you may come across. She is teaching the mostly direct method and indirect methods.
The goal for these days is to work very hard and to fill the pattern with the pieces, tesserae as much as possible. During the 15 minute breaks, the student can share photos of their existing mosaics, if they wish to get some quick tips and advices.
Patterns have been carefully selected by Andjelka. You will have a variety of images to choose from. Andjelka doesn't allow students to select an image of their own. She has pre-chosen images with right angle, proper light, proper cuts that are need to practice, and Andjelka’s lectures are all about that. Andjelka understands that somebody won't like it but, please, consider the fact that she has to transfer the knowledge and teach people how to make their own portraits in the future. By using Andjelka’s patterns you will have a chance to compare and discuss about different solutions in andameneto, colors, shapes, etc between everyone in the workshop. This is part of the learning process. Despite the fact that some patterns can be the same, the final result will show so many different approaches. The students will have to make mosaics during the workshop by using Andjelka’s pattern. Photos from this workshop will be published on the internet, or magazines as promo material for future workshops.
During the workshop we will have 1h long lunch break, and 2x15 min. breaks
