The Marks That Make
GALLERY of CONTEMPORARY MOSAICS
1127 W Granville Ave, Chicago, Il 60660
September 14 – November 11, 2018
The Marks that Make, an exhibition of mosaics and the drawings that have inspired them. The process of developing concepts and ideas, from marks on paper to fully realized mosaics and sculpture is revealed through the works of over a dozen artists creating locally and abroad. Drawing is an integral part of the practice of the artists who use line, form and contrast to inspire works in marble, stone, ceramic, and glass. Traditionally, mosaics are created beginning with a cartoon; this is a map or plan that is drawn so the structure for the mosaic can expand the idea. In this collection of contemporary mosaic artists, the drawings are beautiful seeds for the resulting works.
Featuring the works of Sue Giannotti, Casey Van Loon, Lydia Shepard, Toyoharu Kii, Verdiano Marzi, Andryea Natkin, Angela Sanders, Martha Crandall, Karen Ami, Pamela Irving, Etty Hasak, Dugald MacInnes, Carolynn Friedman, and Oona D’mello
