SAMA Founding Member and President Emeritus continues to pave the way for American Mosaic Art
American Mosaic Art Enters Permanent Collection of Italian Art Museum
SAMA is very proud to share the news that Sonia King’s mosaic artwork Depthfinder has been acquired by the Museo d’Arte della città di Ravenna (MAR). It is the first mosaic by an American included in the MAR’s permanent collection of contemporary mosaic art. King’s art will be featured prominently during RavennaMosaico, the biennial international mosaic festival in Ravenna, Italy, October 12 – November 24, 2013.
The presentation of Depthfinder will be October 12, 2013 in conjunction with the opening of the redesigned galleries for contemporary mosaic art at the MAR. The evening, known as Notte d’Oro (Night of Gold), signals the opening of over twenty mosaic exhibitions. King will have two other works on view during RavennaMosaico. Coded Message: Invisible Ink II, will hang in the international juried exhibition Mosaics from the World while Tabula Rasa will be part of Bibliomosaico, an invitational exhibit exploring the relation between mosaics and books.
King commented, “I am honored that my work has been chosen by the Museo d’Arte in Ravenna for inclusion in their permanent collection of contemporary mosaic art. I’d like to say it’s a ‘dream come true’ but I never dreamt this big.”
An award-winning artist known for her dynamic and complex abstract mosaics, King’s work presents a uniquely personal expression of the power of mosaic art to challenge the viewer and engage the senses: visual, tactile and emotional. Seemingly limitless blends of materials are woven together into complex compositions that are organic and familiar but stimulate the imagination. Macro and micro visions of our landscape are simultaneously at rest and moving, pulling the pieces together into complex compositions while exploring the interaction of each element and the mystery of the spaces between.
King is a founding member and President Emeritus of SAMA and has been a guiding light for growth and inspiration not only for SAMA, but the American Mosaic Art Community as a whole.
King was featured in the June/July issue of American Craft Council’s American Craft Magazine article Souvenirs of a Journey. She is currently featured in the October/November issue in the “To the Editor” section where SAMA members Nancie Mills Pipgras, George Fishman and Liz Brazelton wrote in to compliment American Craft magazine and Ms. King on the article.
Sonia King is continually paving the way in contemporary fine art for all mosaic artists and we are thrilled for her successes.
Congratulations Sonia!
