Session 7: Advancing your Drawing and Compositions Skills for Mosaics with Darcel Deneau

2-Day Session in Darcel’s Studio!
Thursday, September 19, 2024, 8:00am – 5:00pm AND Friday, September 20, 2024, 8:00am – 5:00pm
Hands-on
Intermediate/Advanced: Artistic Development
Price: $500 (Includes $50 materials fee, transportation to offsite Studio and Lunch)

This session should particularly benefit those who want to strengthen their drawing and composition skills and ultimately make better mosaics. Students will learn the basics of perspective drawing and proportion.  With the goal of strengthening our work we will talk about the benefits of drawing versus tracing and how we gain greater control over our composition. We will learn the key elements of strong compositions and apply them to our work.

Photo references will be provided, however, in this course, students are encouraged to bring their own photo reference and photos of previous work with the intention of building on their individual creative visions and/or styles.

This will be a hands on workshop and students will be supplied with the necessary materials to complete a 9” x 12” mosaic.

This class will also focus on color value and technical skills as they relate to mosaics.

Darcel Deneau is a 2021 Kresge Arts in Detroit Fellow and graduate of the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan, USA. For over two decades, she has drawn inspiration from her affection for Detroit and her optimism for its comeback. Darcel’s painting background enables her to bring a unique perspective and contributes to the painterly style of her mosaic work.

Darcel is actively involved in the Detroit Arts Community serving as an alumni council member for the College for Creative Studies and is a lifetime board member, as well as, a member of the exhibition committee at the Detroit Artists Market. Her work is widely collected and can be found in many public and private collections. Darcel works daily in her studio and has recently started to instruct. She has taught workshops at two previous SAMA conferences and has three online courses with Mosaic Arts Online. darceldeneau.com
