The workshop encourages students to experience and use stained glass in Carol Shelkin’s unique, painterly fashion and understanding realism in mosaic art. Students will be introduced to the tones, gradations, many colors, and values of stained glass. We will learn how to nip stained glass using wheeled nippers, cut and learn how to “paint with glass” creating a realistic mosaic still life or landscape for interior display. In this workshop, students use traditional and non-traditional mosaic andamento of their choosing and fine art techniques that will be taught to understand the structure, planes in art, value, and types of shadows. There will be lessons on shading, color, and understanding how to apply these techniques to any mosaic style. Mosaic is unique to all students and my goal is to help each student develop and find their own style. There will be professional artist tricks taught. Please bring questions! Photographic models will be provided. Other subjects will include composition, presenting artwork to gallery owners, exhibitions, building a resume, pricing, shipping, framing – or not framing, photographing your mosaic art, and much more. The lessons taught and instruction given will last the student long after the class is over. Remember, no question will be left unanswered.

Supply list for Realism Workshop  – STUDENTS TO PROVIDE OWN SUPPLIES!

  • One roll: Blue Painter’s tape   or masking tape ( 24″ needed)
  • Substrates 8”x10” (painted medium gray with acrylic paint)  Dick Blick Wooden Painting Boards or MDF works well.
  • Stained glass – wispy Stained Glass/  Stained Glass See below
  • Color Pencil one per student: ( red, blue, green – pick two)
  • Pen   –one per student
  • Small paper cups/ empty yogurt cup  for water & small paintbrush – 1/4” sable or equal
  • Welbond adhesive
  • Carbon paper – one sheet per student
  • Sharpie marker black – regular –  (fine point – and Regular Black)  (one per student)

  • Toothpick – three (for positioning glass)
  • Wheeled Nippers  (Lepponits)
  • Tweezers
  • Grinder (optional)
  • Handouts  (I’ll send via email.)

  • Before the workshop, the glass needs to be cut into about 3” x 2” pieces.

NOTE: Stained Glass  – usually comes in 8”x10” sheets.  – After registration, Carol will contact each student on what glass to buy.  

Carol Shelkin is a full-time visual artist, instructor, and mentor of contemporary fine-art mosaic. She is continuing to develop her original works, unique style, and teaching attributes.  Her studies include the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Studio Arte del Mosaico, Italy where she developed her painting, ceramic and mosaic methods.  Her eclectic approach to surface design – placing glass where a painter would place paint – is the perfect marriage of these two loves.    Carol teaches and shows her work worldwide. Her creations are described as “painting with glass” and appear in many collections, exhibitions, and galleries where they have received special recognition and awards.  As a world traveler, she also offers MOSAIC ART RETREATS & TOURS in Spain, Italy, Costa Rica, Mexico, Morocco, Ireland, and France encouraging her students with gentle direction to improve their personal style.
