Hands-on
Intermediate/Advanced: Artistic Development
Price: $530 (Includes $105 materials fee)
During the course the instructor will guide you through the process of creating color in mosaic and you will learn how to create beautiful color mixes that will help your work stand out. Under the supervision of Maestra Mosaicista Vera Belikova you will be able to create 2-4 colour mixes yourself and will learn how to make many more colors just by observing your coursemates’ works. You will also analyse the use of color in works by Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, mosaic artists Giulio Candussio, Tatiana Dubovskaya, Jae Hee Kim, Joanna Kessel and even French pointillists Paul Signac and George Seurat to develop your eye for color palettes. Based on the analysis of color mixes in three similar mosaics created by the instructor especially for the course you will have a unique chance to experience and discuss the perception of several ways of working with color: from simple to more elaborated. All the key information from the first theoretical part of the workshop will be summarized in a printed workbook that you will be able to keep.
In preparation for the course you will be asked to choose a unique sketch, designed by the instructor especially for the event(download sketch here). The designs differ in complexity, where 1 is the simplest and 3 – the most difficult. Please evaluate the level of your mosaic background before deciding which one is more suitable for you. Remember that you will have 12 hours to accomplish a mosaic of about 6’’x6’’ made in the direct method with tesserae cut with a mosaic hammer and a hardie or hand nippers. Please let the organizers know in advance what mosaic you would love to create, so that all the necessary smalti, wooden substrates and cement glue (Kerabond T + Isolastic) can be purchased in time as part of your Materials Fee. We are happy to announce that you are going to work with some unique smalti brought straight from Italy. The instructor will visit two smalti furnaces Donà Spilimbergo and Smalti Mosaico Morassutti and pick up the best colors for your project. The colors will be purchased in the right quantity, so you don’t have to worry about not having enough materials for finishing your work.
This session should particularly benefit those mosaic artists who are working with contemporary or abstract motifs, want to use smalti in their work, and expand their knowledge of how to use color theory effectively as it applies to mosaic art.
Participants should bring:
- nippers appropriate for smalti (Hammers and Hardies to be available)
- Tweezers
- Palette knife or other spreading tool
- Container for mixing cement glue
- Apron
- Notebook and pencil/pen
- Download Sketches
