Mastering Gradations and Shading with Yulia Hanansen – SOLD OUT

Friday, October 31, 8:00am – 5:00pm
Workshop: Hands-On
All Levels: Technical Development
Price: $395  (Includes $60 Materials Fee)

Exploring gradations and shading in mosaic arts presents an exciting challenge even for those who have played with shading in other art forms. The unique tessera size makes the steps in shading and gradation greater, which can result in abrupt changes in the tonal values. How to make it all work to benefit your mosaic composition?

Working on shading in mosaics is all about creating an optical effect that results in a smooth looking transition between the colors and tones.

In this workshop, you will learn how to create mixing effects with tesserae to make transitions between different shades smooth and more gradual. We will start by working with different shades of the same color and then move on to transitions made in two or more colors. This type of gradation could be applied to representational work, such as flower petals or landscapes, and abstract pieces alike. We will also discuss thin-set tinting options and how the interstice space contributes to successful gradients. Throughout the workshop, you will make several small dry-laid samples to practice your techniques before attempting a final 8”x8” project, which you will create with stained glass and thin-set. Hands-on demos and a visual presentation in the beginning are part of this workshop.

Students should bring the following tools: mosaic wheeled cutter, glass cutter, pliers, tweezers, #2B graphite pencil, and goggles if not wearing glasses.

The instructor will provide: a glass of various colors and shades, substrates, adhesive, colorants, drawing surfaces, and other supplies.

Yulia Hanansen is a second-generation artist. She has been professionally involved in mosaic making since 2001. Her Mosaic Sphere Studio, LLC, was the first mosaic studio/gallery in the state of Michigan to showcase and represent mosaic artwork. The studio is currently located in the charming city of Baltimore, Maryland, USA, where Yulia works and lives. Pieces include architectural installations, wall pieces, back-splashes, wall art, and public and community projects.

Yulia is a recipient of numerous awards for her mosaic and printmaking artwork, including “Best in Show” and “Juror’s Choice” awards at Mosaic Arts International. Her works have been exhibited in galleries nationwide and internationally.

The artist’s latest works represent her fascination with themes of nature, climate change, cosmos, and the connection of human beings to it. She is interested in depicting places and natural phenomena that can often only be seen with the help of technology.

Yulia holds B.F.A. from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, an M.A. from the University of Michigan, and an M.F.A. from Columbia University.
