History of SAMA’s Mosaic Marathon Projects with Kim Emerson

Since 2007 SAMA has “given back” to worthy charities of the cities where the annual mosaic summits are conducted through the creation of large scale mosaic installations. During the SAMA conferences attending members have participated in the assembly of beautiful and meaningful projects during the long hours of the conference gathering. Each project has a unique story about how it was designed and created by SAMA artists. This session will be very informative for the mosaic artist who wishes to learn more about how to create large scale mosaics. Plus, it will be a time for those who would like to reminisce about the fun and history of the program now in its eighth year. This is a presentation that looks back, and then into the future, at the Mosaic Marathon program as a celebration of SAMA’s legacy that touches so many hearts in the cities wherever the mosaic summit takes us!
Kim Emerson has been designing and creating mosaic installations for private and public spaces since 1990. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Architectural History, and her Master of Science in Historic Preservation of Architecture both from the University of Oregon, School of Architecture and Allied Arts. Prior to establishing her own business, Kim Emerson Mosaics, LLC, Kim worked for Architect Milford Wayne Donaldson, F.A.I.A., and world-renowned artist James Hubbell. She also has extensive experience working with non-profit organizations, construction, arts education, galleries, and museums. A selection of her largest commissions were contracted with Rady Children’s Hospital of San Diego for Carley’s Magical Gardens, City of Cerritos, CA with Los Angeles County Public Art Program, the City of Carlsbad, the City of San Diego, the Worcester Art Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts, the ABHOW Foundation in Arizona and California, and the Citizen’s Council for the Arts in Couer d’ Alene, Idaho. ~ kimemersonmosaics.com

Achieving Well-Bonded Porcelain, Glass and Stone Mosaics with Tom Dzurenda

During this seminar, Mr. Dzurenda will give a PowerPoint presentation on the materials artists use to bond their mosaics to their substrates. He will lead an interactive discussion on the necessity of matching mortars (bonding agent) to the type of mosaic material being used on the substrate – porcelain, glass or stone tiles.
Attendees at this session will:
1) Gain an awareness of the roles both substrate and tiles play in achieving a lasting bond
2) Learn how to select the proper mortars/adhesives for the best bond with a specfic mosaic tile
3) Be able to understand proper adhesive application procedures and techniques
4) Be aware of grout options and the proper selection for their mosaics.
Attendees are invited to ask questions during the presentation to maximize knowledge and relate to individual situations.
Tom Dzurenda is a Regional Technical Services Supervisor for MAPEI Corporation. He concentrates on product training seminars and answers customer technical questions for MAPEI’s clients. He also handles technical complaints working to help users solve problems they experience. You Can Do It! Technical Skills, Solutions and Confidence Installing Mosaics On-Site with Cynthia Fisher and Christine Kenneally

If you want to take the next step in your mosaic career by doing on-site installations, but wonder whether you are ready, this workshop and discussion is perfect for you. As a team we’ll analyze the anatomy of a residential installation that we conducted in Arlington, VA, in September of 2014. With well-documented imagery we will show all the stages, from proposal to concept, design, fabrication, and installation. We’ll discuss some of the challenges we faced in the installation and what methods we used to problem solve. We are eager to share technical tips and specific approaches that will be of use for anyone wanting to pursue this kind of mosaic work. We’ll do a ‘live’ demonstration on how to attach a mosaic in sections to a vertical wall and allow time for Q&A.
Cynthia Fisher has been a professional artist for twenty-five years with a focus on mosaics since 2000. At BIG BANG MOSAICS Fisher creates mosaic installations in public, residential, and corporate settings nationwide. Her diverse body of work ranges from illustrative to painterly to non-representational. Fisher’s abstract mosaics have received prestigious national and international awards, including the Orsoni Prize Honorable Mention in Venice, Italy in 2011. The artist conducts numerous school and community projects. Two recent international projects: participating in the “First International Urban Mosaic Intervention” in Santiago, Chile, and returning to Quetzaltenango, Guatemala to conduct a second community mosaic installation. Christine Kenneally is an artist from Easthampton, Massachusetts who has been working in mosaics since 2004, and teaching since 2007. With a background in human services and community building, she has led group mosaic projects in Guatemala and Peru, as well as western Massachusetts and New Hampshire. She teaches one to five day workshops to adults and teens at craft schools and for private groups. Christine has done both small and large-scale mosaic installations using a variety of materials and methods in private residences, small businesses, universities and non-profit organizations. Her personal work is inspired by elements of nature, the human form, and the relationships between shapes and patterns. Her teaching incorporates traditional mosaic methods and concepts, with an understanding that a mosaic comes alive when the individual artist chooses when to follow the rules and when to creatively abandon them. ~ christinekenneallyart.com

Mireille Swinnen is Belgian by nationality but has lived abroad all her adult life. She currently lives in Los Angeles but dedicates a minimum of three months a year to her mosaic studio in Belgium where she teaches mosaics since 2006. Every year, Mireille organizes international workshops for her students to Venice, Spilimbergo, Rome or France (Paray-le-Monial) bringing much-needed foreign exposure and new techniques to her most dedicated students. Over the past few years, Mireille has specialized in animal and human portraits in the preferred medium of her choice, smalti. Her work has been selected for various shows and exhibits, SAMA Chicago, SAMA Seattle, the yearly exhibit in Paray-le-Monial and multiple private exhibitions. Mireille is a proud and celebrated member of SAMA and CMA. More of her work and articles on her views can be found on the respective websites.
On the basis her latest body of work and a well-written application form, Mireille was recently appointed as the 2014 Artist in Residence at the Museum of Glass, Tacoma, a promise of new skills and possibilities which she hopes to incorporate in her future mosaics. Using Powerpoint and film clips Mireille will walk you through the experience from start to finish, a five-day workout in the hot shop of the museum directing three gaffers to execute the 9 pieces that she designed. Mireille is looking forward to explain to you what it took to get prepared for this task and to tie every part of the execution back into the writing of the application form, which got her appointed in the first place. The forms of reasoning that she applied are valid to accomplish any task and will also help you with completing your mosaic work or getting prepared to be juried into a show.
