Spontaneous Mosaics & More!
San Diego Mosaic School
On-going workshops throughout the year
Create a wall art mosaic on a 12" x 12" wood panel substrate, or cement garden step, to be displayed in your interior space or garden scape. This mosaic technique is inspired by the “Spontaneous Mosaic” method and philosophy made famous within the global mosaic community by the beloved late Ilana Shafir of Ashkelon, Israel. The Shafir family has given special permission to Kim Emerson to share and teach her version of this technique at the San Diego Mosaic School. This method is believed to be the best way to gather a serious understanding and practice of the medium mosaics if you are a beginner, and/or if you are experienced but want to practice and advance your "andamento". We will be working with a variety of tesserae (that is the pieces of tile and “stuff” that makes up your mosaic). You will also have the opportunity to cut with a hammer and a hardie (Roman style hammer and chisel). Different shapes and size wood panels will be available to choose from. If you need to use special tile tape and tile mesh for building your mosaic in this workshop then those mosaic techniques will also be available to learn and create with!
