Wet carving concrete is a technique that involves hand carving a soft mixture of sand and cement. Each student will mix their own batch and place it in a form. When the mixture has set sufficiently carving begins and must be completed before it gets too hard to carve. Each person will have made a planter or small sculpture weighing about 40 pounds. No power tools are used.

The process of wet carving concrete is an excellent way of stretching one’s creative nature because as it slowly sets it requires the carver to stay focused and engaged with the process.

I carve along with the group for demonstration purposes. As you proceed with your piece I will be able to guide you to the right tools, help you see where you can refine the surface and will encourage you to bring out the best result in your work.

Wet Carving can be used in whole or in part in as a durable foundation for mosaic constructions. This session should particularly benefit those who wish to add a new technique to their creative toolbox.

Elder Jones has been wet carving concrete for thirty-five years. He received national attention on HGTV and Southern Living Magazine. His work and the wet carved technique is featured extensively in the two popular books by Sherri Warner Hunter. He has been associated with Just Looking Gallery in San Luis Obispo, CA and La Mesa of Santa Fe Gallery on Canyon Road in New Mexico.
