Animal Portraiture in Mosaic Art with Andrea Shreve Taylor
Session 28: Thursday, April 25, 2019, 8:00am – 5:00pm
Workshop: Hands-On
Intermediate/Advanced
Price: $345(Includes $50 Materials Fee)
Animals are a popular mosaic portraiture subject matter and this is your chance to work with an artist with a particular passion and talent for this art form. In this workshop, which is a condensed version of one that Andrea has taught over the years, you will learn the process to create a portrait of your special companion animal or a close-up portrait of another non-companion animal if you so desire. You will learn the techniques to capture the spirit and personality of your beloved pet or selected animal in the mosaic medium. We will explore both direct and indirect methods of creating a portrait. Andrea will share her extensive experience creating the animal in mosaic and guide you in developing your own skills through a combination of lecture, Q&A, and independent hands-on creativity. You will learn about color and shading, lay patterns and andamento, opera, composition and other aspects of design. You will also learn how to use the appropriate tools and materials during this workshop and will experience creating your own animal portrait using art glass, adhesives, and substrates suitable for interior display. Participants will work with their own photos that will be approved by the instructor for suitability prior to the workshop. You may leave with a completed (ungrouted) project, dependent upon your individual working speed, or you will be provided with enough glass to complete your project later on your own. You may choose to do a more stylized portrait, which is a speedier process or begin work on a more realistic representation. This session should particularly benefit those who already have some experience and comfort in making mosaics using stained (art) glass and using basic glass cutting tools, and who wish to honor a companion animal through their artwork, or to broaden their skills in representational mosaic art.
