Andamento [from the Italian andare]: The act, or way, to go or move. The way to conduct yourself, to advance, to proceed.

Applied to mosaics, andamento is the flow or direction of the lines; the shape and path in which the tesserae are laid to create a composition.

Through a series of discussions, exercises, and hands-on practice, students will learn classical andamento principles and how to apply them to modern mosaics. We will study and practice the rules of andamento and discuss the many ways in which variations in our materials, dimensions, spacing and a looser interpretation of the principles can help us achieve different effects. After a thorough lesson on hammer and hardie, students will build lines on a temporary substrate using the knowledge acquired in the lecture/demo part of the workshop. We will touch on color theory and blending of color in combination with andamento, and discuss subtle and bold ways to use different materials to create mosaics reflective of your personal style. This is not a project class; it is a technique class. Students can, if they wish, take their sample boards home. These will be set on temporary substrates. Be sure to bring some plastic and padding material to protect your boards for travel, if needed.

Although Anabella encourages the use of hammer and hardie and will be demonstrating proper technique throughout the course, students are welcome to use their own nippers throughout the workshop. No instruction on the use of nippers will be available.

Anabella Wewer is a classically trained, internationally exhibited mosaicist, working mainly in modern and abstract fine art mosaics. Her work rooted in a sense of time and place, drawing her inspiration from the materials she uses or the places from where they originate. She is also an accomplished metalsmith and a graphic designer by profession, and by extension her work tends to be very graphic, incorporating found objects and storytelling narratives.
