This workshop will explore the use of discarded shards and materials like circuit boards, blown apart tires, drinking straws and metal scraps in the context of the creation of contemporary mosaics.  The course will work from a base of mosaic fundamentals of the rules of traditional andamento using both traditional materials as well as very non-conventional ‘other’ materials.  Students will have a selection of unusual materials to integrate within a palette of complimentary traditional and unconventional tessera, adhesives and mechanical fastening to create their own finished mosaic.  Guidance in relief and three-dimensional approaches will be given. Methods of cutting, shaping and adhering materials will reach beyond traditional methods but will use the technique of direct setting tesserae in the mortar and leaving the mosaic ungrouted.

Meghan Walsh is a licensed architect and studio artist based in Washington, DC. She has taught architecture at Catholic University and Howard University. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Massachusetts, a Master’s of Architecture from the University of Michigan and a Master’s in Real Estate Finance from Georgetown University. She has won awards for her mosaic work including the 2017 MAI award for Best Architectural and Site-Specific Mosaic and an American Institute of Architects award for the Manannán Mac Lir Mosaics project in Ireland. Her work is featured in various juried exhibitions and solo shows and has permanent large-scale public art in the Washington, DC metro system.
