SOLD OUT – Dalle de Verre Window Hanging with Sophie Drouin and Heather Vollans
Session 34: TWO DAY SESSION! Tuesday, April 23, 2019 8:00am – 5:00pm AND Wednesday, April 24, 2019, 8:00am – 5:00pm
Workshop: Hands-On
Intermediate/Advanced
Price: $475 (Includes $50 Materials Fee)
This workshop will be focused on the creation of one dalle de verre and concrete window hanging per student. Students will spend their first day forming their own clay mold to create a custom-shaped recipient into which they will lay cut and faceted dalle de verre pieces before pouring concrete around them and reinforcing the mix with metal and fiberglass. The dalle de verre will be pre-cut for the sake of time and safety, but faceting and fine-tuning will be done during the class, providing ample opportunity for creativity. The cement should be poured before the end of the first day so it can cure overnight and the mold taken apart on the second day before cleaning the finished piece off.
This marks the first time that dalle de verre will ever be taught at SAMA. Students are asked to wear enclosed shoes with socks (no sandals) for the first day, and to bring safety glasses if they own any.
Internationally recognized, award-winning mosaic artist Sophie Drouin is admired for her eclectic vision and artistic experimentation. In early 2018 she was the Invited Artist at SAMA’s Mosaic Arts International exhibition in Boston, Massachusetts. She is the first North American-based artist ever to be given this special honor on her own. Ms. Drouin is the English editor and chief translator of the French publication ‘Mosaique Magazine’. Her art has been featured in professional exhibits in Italy, France, the United States, and Canada. She has performed as a juror in several important competitions and has taught technique classes at many mosaic studios. Classically trained in Canada, Italy, France, and the United States, she is lauded for her innovative work in combining natural stone and marble materials with mosaic glass and metal, in both traditional and modern styles. Her works include wall hangings, sculptures, window hangings in Dalle de Verre, and other uniquely textured and contoured techniques. SophieMosaics.com
Heather Vollans shares, “The biggest influence in my work is color and texture – my upbringing in Australia, my years traveling, especially in the Middle East and Europe have stayed with me and play a major role in my work. Working in construction for years I saw so much texture – metals, ceramics, wood, concrete etc – but also so much waste and too much going to landfill! Since my teenage years, I’ve had a passion for making things from discarded materials. I see a new life in interesting blank forms. I progressed through many crafts including decoupage, paper mache, wood finishing, patchwork quilting – always giving new life to old materials. Furniture restoration, concrete sculpture, and mosaics have developed from these beginnings and continue to be my passions.” DawningDecorStudio.com
