This workshop should particularly benefit those artists who have work which needs to be well photographed for applications, social media, documentation, etc.

Goal: The goal of this workshop is to equip mosaic artists with the knowledge they need to take photos of their work which are acceptable for applications.

Benefits: Participants will be able to take better photos of their art work, thus they will have an increased chance of being accepted into shows, receiving grants, etc.

During the hands-on segment, attendees will work together in two teams to construct two low-cost lightboxes (one per group) and will then use this in photographing their own work (which should be no larger than 18 inches in any dimension). We will problem-solve as a group when photographing more difficult pieces.

Students can bring a finished mosaic to be photographed (less than 18 inches in any dimension – perhaps a Mosaic Art Salon entry), and one full-size jpeg file of their photographed artwork will be emailed to them within the following two weeks of the workshop.

Questions will be encouraged throughout the seminar, and a formal Q&A will also occur after the hands-on period should there be sufficient remaining time.

Tools/Materials to be Brought by Students:

one piece of artwork (measuring no more than 18” in any dimension) to be photographed by the participant.
if possible, the camera that the participant will be using when photographing on their own—PLEASE NOTE that the attendee will need to have at least a basic understanding of how to use their own camera before attending the workshop.

As both an artist and a photographer, Tamara Gentuso has found that the world is all about stories; thus, much of her work is about telling stories. Whimsy is the filter she uses to view her world when working with clay creating this sort of magic at every touch. However, when photographing, her leanings are towards photojournalism—telling real stories. “As I like stories with happy endings best, I am quite okay with the idea that my art and my photography don’t require a function beyond stirring the mind and soul through my storytelling. In a nutshell, my goal both in the clay studio and when behind a camera is to bring to life that quiet joy which is seeded deep inside each of us.”
