Into the Third Dimension – Mosaic on 3-D forms with Marian Shapiro
NOTE: this ADD-ON course is ONLY AVAILABLE to registrants of Session 25A or 25B, Bend Fold and Undulate with Marian Shapiro
Session 26: Thursday, April 25, 2019, 8:00am – 5:00pm
Workshop: Hands-On
Beginner/Intermediate
Price: $115 (Includes $15 Materials Fee)
For the first time at SAMA, Marian is offering you the opportunity to build on and enhance the skills you learned in Session 25A/25B, Bend Fold and Undulate. Bend Fold and Undulate teaches you how to make dimensional substrates. Into the 3rd Dimension takes this one step further and gives you practical experience of mosaicking on to them.
Using the undulating or folded substrate you completed in Session 25A or 25B, you will make an ungrouted textural mosaic to your own design, using the direct technique with colored thinset.
At the beginning of the day, we will discuss design in more depth and recap on the challenges involved in designing for and mosaicking over a three-dimensional form. You will get practical experience of working over a substrate that isn’t flat and learn lots of tips and tricks, including how to fit tesserae over curve, and working out designs for folded substrates. There will be a demonstration and discussion on the correct ways of using and colouring thinset and the rest of the day will be taken up with mosaicking. Marian will also recap on some of the basics, including correct cutting techniques, opus, and andamento. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion and you should leave with a completed mosaic.
Substrates, hanging hardware, thinset and colorants will be provided but students will be asked to bring their own mosaic materials and tools to cut them with. A full list will be sent to registered participants.
Marian believes strongly that people learn best by doing and her teaching style is highly participative. The class is kept small to give students individual attention and students are actively encouraged to ask questions. Full, illustrated course notes are provided to take away.
Some mosaic experience is desirable.
Adopted Australian, Marian Shapiro has been working full time in mosaic since becoming obsessed by the art form in 2003. She is fond of a visual pun and is probably best known for her dimensional works which give the illusion of flowing material. Her artwork is shown and collected nationally and internationally.
Marian has been teaching mosaics since 2008 and is widely sought after as a teacher and speaker both in Australia and abroad. Her teaching style is highly participative and she works with small groups to ensure that all participants benefit fully. Students gain practical, usable skills and techniques that they can develop after the course and integrate into their own practice. Presentations give inspiration and information and full written notes accompany each workshop. dariandesign.com.au
