Marian writes: My husband David buys as much mosaic art as I do, and the works here are both individual and joint purchases. Some were swaps with other artists and some were bought. All of them call to us and have a special place in our home just outside Sydney. Many of the pieces are from artists who are also personal friends. Particularly at the moment, when all social contact is virtual, these are particularly poignant.
Erin Pankratz’s piece brings a burst of life and colour and speaks to Kelley Knickerbockers’ two monochrome works in the same room, where her deliberate ‘damage’ to the surface results in beauty.
It’s always great if we can support fellow artists and we have bought many pieces at MAANZ conferences, including Barb Ehlenbruch’s “The Beauty of Boredom” for the way it perfectly captures the idea of a flight of fancy and David Humphrey’s “And 50 Shades of Grey” for its impossibly precise cutting and placement.
David bought Caitlin Hepworth’s mosaic as he was fascinated by how something so dark can be so beautiful. The three pieces by Barb Uhlenbruch, Kate Butler, and Kim Wozniak were a mixture of swaps and purchases and are lovely examples of how expressive this medium can be. Last but not least, Christine Brallier’s mosaic was the first piece I ever commissioned. It captures my cat Gremlin perfectly in that moment just before a pounce. We keep it in our covered deck where he often used to hang out and it captures him perfectly.
